This October Team Members from Kennards Self Storage, armed with just six Kennards boxes to build a shelter will join others for the annual Stepping Stone House Sleep under the Stars fundraiser at Hickson Road The Rocks, raising funds to help Stepping Stone House continue the great work that they do for NSW homelessness and youth at risk. Kennards Self Storage are Gold Sponsors of this event and are also supplying Kennards Boxes to all participants to build their shelter to sleep under for the night.

About Stepping Stone House

Established in 1989, Stepping Stone House is a charity that provides accommodation and personal development for children and young people aged 12-24 years old who through no fault of their own find themselves homeless, at risk or unable to live at home. It is also an accredited out-of-home-care residential service providing medium to long term accommodation across three homes in Sydney.

The aim is to develop their self-esteem, resilience, self-confidence and good health through motivational experiential learning including outdoor education and adventure so that they achieve responsible independence and be the best they can be. They are unique in that young people who live at the Stepping Stone Houses will often stay for years, thereby giving the time necessary to undo the impact the trauma has had in their young lives.

The youth are generally referred to Stepping Stone House from all over NSW via Community Services, Juvenile Justice, crisis accommodation services and self-referred. For many of these young people, their lives have been turbulent and disrupted and they have possibly never experienced a stable, safe and secure living arrangement.

Of the 40 children and young people we provide support and care for, only 4 are funded by the government, we rely on your generous donations and fundraising to support the other 36.

The service has 24-hour supervision and the staff of Stepping Stone House work as a team to provide care to the young people. Each staff member is chosen because of their unique skill set and commitment to the aims and Mission of Stepping Stone House. We have pride in the fact that Stepping Stone House is more than just a residential service. It is a “home away from home” environment where young people will be treated with respect and fairness, while living in a house where a quality of life is valued and promoted.

Some of the Team at Kennards Self Storage had the pleasure of meeting the young live in residents of Stepping Stone House when we were invited to visit, enjoying a tour of the houses and a lunch cooked by the residents themselves, which was amazing!

The young kids we met have not grown up in a stable family environment. Most have had a traumatic childhood, often exposed to drugs, alcoholism, sexual abuse and poverty. They didn’t choose to live this way. Stepping Stone House gives them a roof over their head and a platform to develop life skills, complete school and teaches them how to live independently.

Homelessness and youth at risk is no joke and all of our support is needed to help these young people. Their future is in our hands to make a difference.
