It’s quite interesting how the Mittagong storage centre came about.

Many will be familiar with the late Neville Kennard; our founder. He fell in love with the Southern Highlands and spent many of the last 30 years of his life on his property at the edge of town. Some time ago, the property at 245 Old Hume Highway came onto the market.

Unlike many of our property decisions these days he had no firm plan or carefully crafted feasibility study. Relying on his entrepreneurial intuition, a love of the area and a belief in its future he could see the potential and snapped it up as quick as he could.

Before developing the land for the storage centre it was rented to a good friend for some years. Many locals will remember the land at that time covered with cherished Citroen’s. At its peak the land had up to 100 Citroen’s in various states of restoration and repair. Anyone sharing the passion for the French classics could come along and stroll through 50 years’ worth of whole cars, half cut wrecks, engines and transmissions spread all over the hillside. Some of the best were a few outstanding condition 2CV’s and DS’. This amazing collection was subsequently relocated to a new location nearby.



More recently when Sam and Neville Kennards approached council with their plans for the biggest storage centre in the Bowral district it was discovered that the beautiful old cottage on the block had local heritage value. The decision was taken to restore it and incorporate it into the grand plan.

This was the origin of the glass tunnel joining the modern, airy retail space and box shop with the historic cottage. Now restored with a brand new roof it provides the venue for our Wi-Fi equipped meeting room, coffee, tea kitchenette and bathroom facilities. All the original windows, tessellated tile doorstep and fretwork have been retained.

“With the finishing touches now in place we couldn’t be happier with the blend of old and new with retaining the cottage” said Sam Kennard. “Our extended family love this area and we retain strong links here. I believe Nev would be incredibly pleased with the finished centre.”
